Lawn Care Tips During A Dry Winter

The number one reason that plants and lawns die during Texas winters is dry weather. Deep water restrictions during times of drought add to this problem and complicate the homeowner’s lawn care plan during the winter months. By following these lawn care tips during a dry winter, you can care for your yard and get through a dry spell with your plants and grasses intact.

Tip #1: Water Your Lawn Only When Truly Dry

Rather than setting your irrigation system to water on a schedule, only water your yard when you see signs that your grass and plants need more moisture. Get to know your plants and their indications of becoming too dry. For instance, you will know your grass is getting too dry when it does not bounce back when stepped on, and when it develops a blue-gray tint. It is good to keep track of rainfall, and be sure to water your plans within a few weeks after the last soaking rain.

Tip #2: Water at the Right Time of Day

The best time to water your lawn is in the early morning hours. This ensures that your grasses and plants will benefit from the extra moisture all day long and that your plants will have dried off by night, preventing some diseases and possible freezing. Waiting until afternoon to irrigate your lawn wastes water, since the heat during this hottest time of the day evaporates some of the moisture before it even reaches your thirsty plants.

Tip #3: Make Sure to Water Deeply

To have beautiful grass and plants in your yard, they need to develop strong roots. Sending water deep into the ground around those roots encourages them to go down deep in the soil, becoming strong and resilient. Remember that less frequent deep watering is better than more frequent light watering.

Tip #4: Water the Worst Areas by Hand

Not all areas of your lawn require the same amount of water. Some will get more sun than others, have more drainage, and contain plants that require more moisture. Pay special attention to these areas, first watching for signs of dryness. You can water only these areas if the rest of your lawn is not yet indicating a need for irrigation. Again, while it is handy to set your watering system on a schedule, paying more attention to what areas need watering and which ones don’t can save water during times of drought.

Tip #5: Use the Right Fertilizer

One final way to get through a dry winter with your lawn care is to reduce the amount of moisture your yard needs by using a bio-stimulant with micro-nutrients, which will build healthy soil and provide similar results to using compost.

With a bit of awareness of your yard and plants and some extra prevention and maintenance, your lawn during a dry winter doesn’t need to result in disaster, even when water restrictions prevent more frequent and scheduled waterings.
